Soapstone is a talc-schist, which is a metamorphic rock. It is largely comprised of talc, which makes it rich in magnesium and very soft, with a value of 1 on the Mohr scale. Because it is so soft, it has been valued by humans for millennia as a carving stone, although it does also have an industrial role as an effective insulator.
These fun carved soapstone animals are a beautiful and tactile introduction to the beauty and varying properties of rocks.
