Four and a half out of five

The Hartmann's Astrolabe (diameter 15 cm) is very beautiful and the parts move wonderfully. Delivery was swift and the box was well packed. So no complaints about this at all. I'm very pleaaed with it.

I would very much like to give it five stars but I have three minor comments. They are all about using the astrolabe as an actual astrolabe - i.e. holding it up to measure the altitude of the sun and the stars. (This is possible and fun if teamed with a phone app such as Stellarium.)

Firstly there is an assumption that the astrolabe will be sitting in its stand. Actually I want to hang it on the wall. This means that the rings at the top have to be strong enough to hold the weight of the astrolabe. On the original museum piece there is one strong ring but for the reproduction you've got a small weak ring attaching the main ring to the Astrolabe (see photo.). So If I hang it up or check the sun's altitude there is a chance that the weaker ring will come apart and the astrolabe will land on the floor.

Secondly there is a moveable shackle attaching the weaker ring to the astrolabe. It needs to be centred so that the astrolabe can hang freely and vertically. Mine is okay (only just), so you need to check the astrolabes before you send them out to ensure that the moveable shackle is centred.

Thirdly, the instruction booklet that comes with the astrolabe need improving. The instructions are pretty well incomprehensible. Please ask the manufacturers to produce a clear guide.

Having said all this, the Astrolabe itself is a lot of fun and well worth the purchase.

Astrolabe

Very substantially made and beautifully engraved this is both a work of art and a scientific tool for demonstrating historical astronomical methods.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review the Astrolabe. We're delighted to know you are pleased with the quality and performance of this beautiful piece.
