Equilateral Optical Glass Prism

Curious Minds Did You Know? The energy of light is measured on the electromagnetic spectrum!

Watch light slow down and separate into its different colours with this Equilateral Optical Prism from Discover Science!

This prism is made using optical glass and will demonstrate that white light is made up of the colours of the rainbow. Sir Isaac Newton in the 17th century was the first to prove that white light was made up of different colours using a glass prism in his experiments. He passed sunlight through a prism and called the band of separated colours a 'spectrum', which means 'ghost of light'.

The prism will refract light into a spectrum if there's a bright beam, e. g. from the Sun or a projector such as lamp light focussed through a lens. The source should be as bright as possible but also small, ideally passing through a narrow slit – you can make your own using a piece of old cardboard placed in front of the light source - to get the clearest colours. If the source is big there will effectively be several overlapping spectra, recombining to white (or off-white). You can get better spectra by using a diffraction grating - a transparent film with thousands of invisible parallel grooves. We strongly recommend our Rainbow Spectrum kit, which contains a glass prism, some diffraction grating, a lens, a LED lamp, detailed instructions, and all you need to discover how to make the best spectra.

Prism measures approximately 51mm x 21mm x 25mm.

This prism is for educational use.
