Ancient Cinema for your Home!
The Magic Lantern is a truly fantastic kit from Astromedia. Used from the 17th Century to create illusions and dazzle spectators, these lanterns are much like modern day projectors. With this kit you can create a fully functioning, beautiful cardboard replica of a Magic Lantern which was originally made of sheet metal, and be able to project photographed slides, self-drawn or printed images using the battery-operated light source.
From the 17th century on magic lanterns made a huge impression on fair ground spectators.
The magic lantern is the mother of all those visual devices and media that have become an essential part of our modern world. Leonardo da Vinci is said to have experimented with projected images, but its real inventor is the Dutch physicist Christian Huygens. In 1659, he constructed an instrument for projecting images painted on glass plates with the help of an oil lamp.
From the 17th century until the dawn of the age of cinema, the magic lantern made a tremendously strong impression on viewers in fairground booths, salons, or children's rooms. Until the triumph of slide and film projectors in the last century, the "magic lantern" was the only way to project still or moving images. Nothing has changed in its design principle since then.
This is a kit for an elegant and fully functional cardboard replica in original size. It comes complete with electric lighting, three lens optics (3x OptiMedia lens 7), and one classical picture strip. One empty strip to make your own slide for projection is included. Also suitable for 36mm film strips.
Curious Minds Did You Know: The first image concerning the magic lantern was dated to 1659, it was sketches of a skeleton, above this the creator of the magic lantern, Christiaan Huygens wrote "for representations by means of convex glasses with the lamp."
