  • A rotating rete (star map)
  • A straight rule for time alignment
  • An alidade (sighting arm) on the back for measuring altitudes

To use a fully functional traditional astrolabe:

  1. Set the date – Rotate the rete so the Sun’s pointer aligns with the correct date on the calendar scale.
  2. Set the time – Align the rule with the known time so the modelled sky matches the real one.
  3. Measure altitude – Use the alidade on the back to sight a star or the Sun and note its height above the horizon.
  4. Read results – Transfer the measurement to the front to determine local time, latitude, the position of celestial bodies, or other astronomical data.

Because date, time, latitude, and star positions are all interconnected on the instrument, the astrolabe functions as an ingenious analogue computer for the medieval sky.
