Hemisferium Villafrechós HourglassC012985
The hourglass that this replica is based upon is dated from the 18th century and was found at Villafrechós in the Castilla region of Spain.
Sand dials were used in Renaissance Europe to time the arrival of people at civic functions. They accompanied professors to the classroom along with their books and manuscripts, and they marked the time for domestic prayers until well into the 18th century. Public speeches, church sermons and watches on ships were the most notable events timed with them.
The Hourglass measures 160mm in height and 98mm across.
Material: Beech and oak wood tainted with natural wax and polished, silk cord, crystal glass, silica dust and brass.
