Curious Minds Did You Know? Scientists determine the age of very old fossils with a process called Carbon-14 dating.

Crinoids are an ancient fossil group that first appeared in the seas of the Middle Cambrian period, about 300 million years before dinosaurs. The name comes from the Greek word krinon, meaning "a lily", and eidos, "form". Crinoids live both in shallow water and in depths as great as 9,000 meters. Those crinoids which in their adult form are attached to the sea bottom by a stalk are commonly called sea lilies.
