| Sundial and Compass | £38.00 |
|
Not that long ago people actually lived by sundial time. Every village and town functioned on local time, depending on local latitude. The arrival of trains and mail coach traffic created a need for coordinated time. Our travel sundial needs a compass to find north. Raising the triangular gnomon upright while pointing the compass needle North will show the time. The correct time will show only if the local latitude corresponds to angle of gnomon. Bronze dry compass, hand colored reproduction compass cards. Hand aged and hand polished.

| The Baader Planetarium/Orrery | £1,825.00 £1,642.50 |
|
This planetarium presents an absolutely unique method of demonstrating celestial relationships.
The Baader Planetarium consists of three units: the star globe being black and transparent simultaneously, the solar system including its electric drive system, located inside the globe and – finally – the planetarium’s base containing the control equipment and transformer.
The celestial globe of the BAADER PLANETARIUM is made of plexiglass which has been subjected to a black color treatment to obtain approximately 5% transparency. This material provides an amazing optical effect: Under direct light the sphere will appear almost opaque due to the light absorbing and reflecting properties of the plexiglass. However, when looking at the planetarium in a somewhat darker room, the human eye will adapt itself to existing light conditions and the sphere will now appear transparent: The solar System inside the globe can be clearly seen.
Using three colors, stars and constellations have been printed... |

| Rainbow Spectrum Kit | £15.00 |
|
How do you make a rainbow? The most common method is to put a prism in a sunny window. If you don't have bright sunshine and try to use artificial light such as a desk lamp or torch, the results are most likely to be disappointing. There are other, more reliable, methods. This kit provides the apparatus and instructions for creating clear spectra in the absence of bright sunlight.
The kit includes:
glass lens
glass prism
cork lens holder
diffraction grating film
cork prism support
LED light
1 elastic bands
rainbow card
instructions
Newton first used the word spectrum (Latin for "appearance" or "apparition") in print in 1671 in describing his experiments in optics. Newton observed that when a narrow beam of sunlight strikes the face of a glass prism at an angle, some is reflected and some of the beam passes into a... |

| Holographic Diffraction Grating Film (unmounted) | £2.00 |
|
Holographic diffraction grating film is used to break up white light into all the colors of the spectrum. It is an ideal choice for spectroscopy experiments, since holographic gratings exhibit significantly sharper diffraction orders than their ruled counterparts by reducing the amount of stray light produced. This results in an increased ability to view absorption and emission lines, with higher spatial frequency gratings (1000 lines/mm).
Other sizes available on request, up to 6" wide x several inches or feet.
Note that this material is highly electrostatic and picks up dust and fingerprints very easily!
A diffraction grating is an optical component with a regular pattern, which splits (diffracts) light into several beams travelling in different directions. The directions of these beams depend on the spacing of the grating and the wavelength of the light so that the grating acts as a dispersive element... |

| Large Ferguson's Orrery | £1,730.00 |
| Hand-crafted Orreries by Roy Mallett
Our large Orrery is a beautifully hand made working representation of the Solar System out to Saturn. It can be run on the electric motor which will reproduce a one year cycle every 5 minutes, or hand cranked. Set in a stained American White Oak case the mechanism is produced in brass and hand assembled in a workshop in Berkshire. All the components are produced in the UK. The case features the signs of the zodiac printed onto brass plates.
A selection of beautiful fully working instruments made in the U.K. to the highest specifications by Roy Mallett. Built to a design created by Paul Kellar MBE these orreries are made combining two of James Ferguson's designs (circa 1763), which are a working representation of the Earth and Moon system, and include all of the planets known at that time.
An Orrery demonstrates many of the important aspects of the monthly and annual movements of the Earth and Moon. The first was made ... |

| Original Newton's Cradle | £14.00 |
|
An LB Classic! Designed by
Mr Loncraine and Mr Broxton over 25 years ago! The first and still the best.
This demonstrates Newton's principle that 'action and reaction are equal and opposite'. If one of the steel balls is lifted and allowed to fall back at one end, then one will swing out the same distance at the other end. This causes the beginning of perpetual motion which dies down only as a result of friction, an interesting process to... |

| Glass Prism | £6.99 |
|
This prism is made using optical glass and will demonstrate that white light is made up of the colours of the rainbow.
This is known as a spectrum.
In the 17th century Sir Isaac Newton was the first to prove that white light was in fact made up of different colours.
He used a glass prism in his experiments.
The prism is 5cm (2 in) long. Each side is about 2.5 cm (1 in).
In optics, a prism is a transparent optical element with flat, polished surfac... |

| Solar Radiometer, long glass stem | £25.50 |
|
In a vacuum inside a free-standing globe the vanes constantly revolve in sunlight. The simplest possible demonstration of solar power.
The radiometer is made by traditional Thuringian hand-blowing in Germany, of crystal-clear Lauschaer bottle glass.
In the glass body is a 4-vane drive assembly, which turns under the influence of light. One side of each vane is black, the other is silver.
Height: ca. 20.5 cm. (8 in)
Globe diameter: ca. 8cm. (3.25 in)
The Crookes radiometer was invented by the chemist Sir William Crookes as the by-product of some chemical research. In the course of very accurate quantitative chemical work, he was weighing samples in a partially evacuated chamber to reduce the effect of air currents, and noticed the weighings were disturbed when sunlight shone on the balance. Investigating this effect, he devised the device named after him, still manufactured and sold to this day as a curiosity item.
