With this portable planetarium you can determine the planets' positions in the solar system at any time from 1970 to 2049.

Planetica can be used in both hemispheres and is set to the solar time at the place of use. If necessary, allow for summer/winter time differences.

Planetica depicts the movement of the first seven planets of the solar system whose orbits are close to the ecliptical plane in which the Earth moves. Neptune and Pluto are very difficult to observe, represented by a series of dots at one-year intervals.

On the outer edges of Planetica, the 12 constellations of the Zodiac near the ecliptical plane are represented with their heliocentric longitude whose origin 0 corresponds to the Spring equinox.

Planet Earth is rotatable with north, south, east and west directions marked. Light LED in the center, representing the Sun, can be turned on to view the day/night cycles.

How to operate Planetica

  1. Select the year by rotating the transparent cover (one revolution per year) until the year appears in the window.
  2. Align the arrow on the rim of the plastic cover to the month and day.
  3. Turn the dial with compass points and clock hours, to the local time (next to arrow). The small ball in the centre represents Earth.
  4. Face south. Tilt the Planetica a little bit towards you, around the E-W line so that the outer edge aligns with the path followed by the Sun, Moon, and planets. Any planets above the E-W line should be visible in a clear sky, in the direction shown on your Planetica. The Sun and other planets will be below the E-W line, i.e. below your horizon (assuming you chose a night time!)
